Andrew Michael, who died suddenly at age 25, inspired this commissioned artwork. In life, Andrew personified compassion, constantly assisting those around him with whatever was needed. Though no longer with us physically, his compassionate spirit is wide-awake. Andrew’s spiritual aesthetic is embodied by this oil painting, which harkens Archangel Michael, leader of the angels and protector of Faith. This painting invokes compassion, protection, love, and strength. A sword of light beams through the center of the canvas to represent protection and service, and the light from the sword bounces throughout the piece illuminating everything in its path. There is an angel with wings within the viewer’s left wing; the angel appeared within the final brushstrokes that took place on the eve of Andrew’s birth date. The contrast of colors represents the existence of both chaos and beauty in life. Though Andrew ultimately succumbed to his pain, his beautiful spirit and good works live on.
When viewing this piece, I hope you feel the joy, movement, and depth of a young man who rests in peace, with a working message that is an embodiment of his namesake, Archangel Michael— that no matter the situation, no matter the challenge, as Michael stands ready with his sword and host of Angels to protect and serve all who call upon him, so Andrew stands at the ready. He is encouraging us to be an example to others — to help one another to clear the path of obstacles, to provide strength and courage to each other, and to help carry one another through dark times. Archangel Michael, along with Andrew, calls upon us to fill each other with hope, inspiration, faith, and love. They are calling us to be there for one another at all times.
Today, the Archangel Michael is evoked for protection, especially from lethal enemies. My hope is that Andrew’s story, embodied in this painting, inspires you to protect, to help someone who may be in pain and despair.
